چکیده

Based on the theory of conceptual metaphor we investigated the evaluative consequences of a match (or mismatch) of different conceptual relations (good vs. bad; abstract vs. concrete) with their corresponding spatial relation (UP vs. DOWN). Good and bad words that were either abstract or concrete were presented in an up or down spatial location. Words for which the conceptual dimensions matched the spatial dimension were evaluated most favorably. When neither of the two conceptual dimensions matched the spatial dimension, ratings were not as favorable as when the dimensions did match, but were still significantly more favorable than when one conceptual category was matched with the spatial category (e.g., UP and abstract), while the other one was not (e.g., UP and bad). Results suggest that a metacognitive feeling of fluency can produce an additional layer of evaluative information that is independent of actual stimulus valence.

Cerebral Cortex doi:10.1093/cercor/bhr128 Brain Potentials Dissociate Emotional and Conceptual Cross-Modal Priming of Environmental Sounds

The attentional effects triggered by emotional stimuli in humans have been substantially investigated, but little is known about the impact of affective valence on the processing of meaning. Here, we used a cross-modal priming paradigm involving visually presented adjective--noun dyads and environmental sounds of controlled affective valence to test the contributions of conceptual relatedness a...

Space-Valence Priming with Subliminal and Supraliminal Words

To date it is unclear whether (1) awareness-independent non-evaluative semantic processes influence affective semantics and whether (2) awareness-independent affective semantics influence non-evaluative semantic processing. In the current study, we investigated these questions with the help of subliminal (masked) primes and visible targets in a space-valence across-category congruence effect. I...

Use a rabbit or a rhino to sell a carrot? The effect of character-product congruence on children's liking of healthy foods.

This study investigated whether unfamiliar characters are as effective as familiar characters in stimulating children's affective responses toward healthy foods. In particular, the authors investigated whether an unfamiliar character which is congruent with a product can be as effective as a familiar character. The authors tested 2 types of character-product congruence: conceptual congruence (o...

Exploring the Meaning of Quality from Urban Space Users’ Viewpoint by Analyzing Conceptual Environment Codes

The main purpose of urban design is to create good and high-quality urban spaces and environments for people to live while such quality may not be determined only by imposing a structural, perceptual and value system of the designer. It can be said that human and his powers to perceive surrounding environments are the focus of urban design. Having reviewed previous researches and theories in re...
